A View of the Sea & Beach, from Mr James Newbolds Plantation, near Indian River, 1788

A View of the Sea & Beach, from Mr James Newbolds Plantation, near Indian River, James Trenchard, 1788, Winterthur Collection.

A postwar land/seascape by James Trenchard, this print is fairly unexceptional. What is interesting is the pair of sailors who relax beside a small building. The anchor and cask suggest this structure may have been a chandlery or storehouse for the boats plowing the sea.

The sailor on the left wears a round hat and single breasted jacket that ends well below the waist and well above the thigh. His slops hang loose down to his ankles. The fellow beside him is in a jacket with three vents (two of which are topped with buttons), a round hat, and a pair of breeches.
